Present a lively baitfish near structure, either free-swimming or slowly trolled, with a leader suited to your target species.

- Livebait rig with a suitable leader and a quality rolling swivel to help reduce line twist.

- Live jack mackerel, slimy mackerel, kōheru or kahawai. Match the hook to the size of your baitfish.

- Quick tip
- Choose a hook that holds the bait securely without restricting its movement. Keep the hook point exposed and avoid damaging the baitfish’s eyes, gills or backbone.

Our Live Bait Hook comes in 6/0 to 12/0. Match your hook to your bait: small livebait, small hook; big livebait, big hook. That keeps it swimming live for longer in the bite zone.
What size fishing hook should I use?
Match the hook to your bait, rig and target species. As a guide from our species notes: 3/0 for kahawai strip baits, 4/0 for Australian salmon, 5/0 for snapper, 7/0 and up for large catfish, 6/0 Live Bait hooks for barramundi, 10/0 Demon Circle or Luminous Beak hooks for red emperor, and 10/0 Demon Circle or Luminous Beak hooks for hāpuku.
